Men's Soccer Battles Charlotte to Scoreless Draw

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team battled Charlotte to a 0-0 draw on Tuesday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Redshirt junior Mac Phillips made five saves in his first shutout of the season. With the result the Tribe sits at 1-2-2 overall, while the 49ers are now 2-2-1.

Charlotte had one of its best chances of the night in the early stages of the match. In the 13th minute Hans Honer cleared some space and launched a shot towards frame. His chance clanked off of the post and out of play.

W&M had four shots in the first period all of which were blocked by 49er defenders. Freshman Antonio Bustamante had a pair of shots blocked, while redshirt junior Ryan Perry and freshman John Fuquene also had shots blocked.

The 49ers had another golden opportunity in the 40th minute. Tommy Madden had an open look at the Tribe goal, and put his shot on frame. Perry cleared the ball off the goal line for the team save.

Out of the gates in the second half, the Green and Gold put its first shot on goal in the game, and also had a shot hit the crossbar. Junior Reilly Maw cleared some space, and uncorked his shot on frame. However, Charlotte goalkeeper Austin Pack was there for the save. In the 58th minute, Bustamante launched a shot off the crossbar, but Charlotte played it to safety.

The Green and Gold's best chance in the second half came in the 62nd minute. Senior Jackson Eskay charged the left side of the box and fired a shot across the mouth of the goal, but the ball rolled just wide of the far post.

Charlotte put four shots on target during the second stanza, but Phillips was up to the challenge. The Tribe goalkeeper turned away shots in the 51st, 77th, 78th and 88th minutes.

Both teams each recorded a shot in the opening minutes of the first overtime, before battling for possession the reaming five minutes. In the 92nd minute, Charlotte's Kyle Parker launched a shot that sailed high, before Maw had a shot blocked in the 95th minute.

Phillips came up with the only save required in either overtime in the 102nd minute on a shot from Brand Bronico. Zhuvonte Wilson also had a chance that he pushed wide in the 104th minute.

Maw recorded the Tribe's lone two shots in the second overtime. The junior sailed a shot high in the 103rd minute, before have a shot go wide in the 108th minute.

Charlotte held a 17-12 advantage in shots during the match, which also included a 6-2 lead in shots on-goal. Maw led the Tribe with five shots, while Bustamante recorded three.

Phillips finished the night with five saves in goal for the Tribe, which is the second-most saves he's had this season. The redshirt junior also notched his 10th career shutout.

The Green and Gold embark on a season-long three-match road swing starting on Saturday, Sept. 19 when the trek to Longwood. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start. On the road trip the Tribe also travels to Navy (Sept. 22) and College of Charleston (Sept. 26). Both of those matches are set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
