Box Score CONWAY, S.C. – The William & Mary men's soccer team battled No. 7 Coastal Carolina to the wire, but fell 2-0 on the road on Saturday night. With the decision the Tribe falls to 1-2-1, while the Chanticleers improve to 4-0-1 on the year.
"We had good first half tonight, but did not cap it off with a goal," head coach Chris Norris said. "Coastal started the second half with more urgency, making it difficult for us to find our front players. Their goal energized them and forced us to chase the game. Unfortunatley, we came up a litte short. Give credit to Coastal. In many ways, they were the most difficult team against which we have played."
W&M had the match's first shot on-goal in the 11th minute. Off of a corner kick from freshman Antonio Bustamante, senior Jackson Eskay was able to turn a shot on target, but Coastal Carolina's goalkeeper Fernando Pina stopped it.
The Tribe turned up its pressure and had three shots in a 10-minute span before the end of the first half. Junior Reilly Maw, classmate Ryan Perry, and freshman Ryder Bell all had shots, but pushed them wide.
At the break, the Green and Gold held a 5-1 advantage in shots. The margin also included a 1-0 advantage in shots on-goal.
Coastal Carolina made the most of its first shot on-goal, scoring in the 57th minute. Sergi Carmargo found Arnar Geirsson inside the box. Geirsson sent a pass to Jair Espinoza, who fired a shot into the lower right corner. The tally made the score 1-0.
The Tribe had a pair of chances for the equalizer in the 73rd minute. Freshman Marcel Berry uncorked a shot on goal, but Pina was there for the save. The rebound found the foot of Jackson Eskay, but Pina was able to recover in time to preserve the Chanticleers lead.
The Chanticleers just missed a chance to double their lead, in large part to a great save by redshirt junior Mac Phillips. Carmago put his shot on frame, but it was stopped. Phillips came up with another stop on the ensuing corner kick.
With the Tribe pushing forward trying to find the equalizer, Coastal scored a goal in the final minute. Carmago found Espinoza again, who fired a shot into the empty net to seal the victory for the Chanticleers.
