LINEBACKERS
Despite the loss of two-time All-CAA standout Airek Green to graduation, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Trevor Andrews' group appears well stocked to remain among the league's best units.
Leading the linebackers will be senior All-America candidate and Butkus Award Watch List honoree Luke Rhodes (6-2, 242), a two-time first-team all-conference standout, who is just the 11th two-time team captain in W&M's 122-season history. In addition to his numerous honors and leadership credentials, the middle linebacker has totaled 191 tackles during the past two seasons en route to establishing himself as one of the nation's top players at his position. While his exceptional strength is notable, the Hollidaysburg, Pa., native also has excellent football instincts and pursues the ball well.
Slated to start alongside Rhodes is senior Ian Haislip and junior Marcus Harvey, both of whom earned significant playing time last season. A versatile linebacker, Haislip (6-2, 230) saw action in all 12 games last season and earned a pair of starts. The Yorktown, Va., native is a sure tackler who has good strength and plays with a physical style. Additionally, he is very competitive and consistently plays hard.
Although he was limited by injury last season and saw action in just seven games with four starts, Harvey (6-2, 210) returned to spring practices healthy and competed at a high level. One of the team's most explosive players, the Great Falls, Va., native is long and athletic with outstanding speed and good ball skills. His potential was on display in the season opener at Virginia Tech last fall when he totaled a team-high 11 tackles with a forced fumble and a TFL in his first career start.
Providing depth at the position will be junior Matt Vlissides, redshirt freshman Josh Dulaney, junior Stephen Lubnow and senior Zach Fetters. A native of Centreville, Va., Vlissides (6-0, 225) is a tough, physical linebacker who is a good tackler and consistently works hard to improve. Additionally, he gained experience as a member of the travel squad during eight games last season. Honored as the 2014 Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year, Dulaney (6-2, 224) is a physical, hard-nosed linebacker who is athletic and plays well in space. The Berryville, Va., native has a high ceiling and possesses the ability to develop into a significant contributor. Lubnow (6-0, 220), who saw action in all 12 games last season – mostly on special teams, is an athletic, reliable linebacker who has good instincts and plays well in space. A former wide receiver and tight end, Fetters (6-3, 235) provides the Tribe with another smart, versatile, veteran linebacker who has seen action in 33 games during his career.
