The William & Mary volleyball team is heading into its second week of pre-season practices this week, with just 12 days left until the season opener. In this camp update, we'll look at five facts, figures, and people to know as the 2015 season approaches.
1) - Winning trophies at home: In the last seven years since head coach
Melissa Aldrich Shelton '91 took over coaching, the Tribe is 18-7 at its home tournaments, a 72% winning percentage. W&M begins the year at home, hosting Gardner-Webb, Norfolk State, and La Salle in a tournament on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28-29.
2) - Team of Champions: The Green and Gold is far and away the CAA's winningest program, taking a total of eight tournament and eight regular season championships. That's the highest total of any team in the CAA's 31-year history, and when active teams are considered, it's nearly the same number as the next three schools combined (Delaware 7, Hofstra 5, JMU 5).
3) - Double-Quadruple: Senior
Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) is on the brink of joining a very select company this season. Coming into her final campaign, Koleva has 837 kills and 914 digs, and is on track to become just the third player in school history to surpass 1,000 in both categories. That would lift her into such company as W&M Hall of Famers
Heidi Erpelding '89 and
Jennifer Torns '92.
4) - Blocking 'em Al(bright): Senior
Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) is also closing in on a major milestone. She enters her last year with 322 total blocks, and is aiming to become just the fourth player ever to surpass 400 blocks. That rolecall includes all-time leader
Anna Agbe-Davies '93,
Beth Ann Hull '89, and
Caitlin Geraghty '05.
5) - League Leaders: The Tribe comes into the season with three veteran All-CAA performers on the roster, which is tied for the most in the conference this fall. That includes Koleva, the 2012 Rookie of the Year and third-team All-CAA in 2013; redshirt-junior
Michelle Heath (Rustburg, Va.), a member of the 2013 all-rookie team; and sophomore
Sara Zumbach (Brentwood, Tenn.), who led all freshmen in the league last year in digs.
The Tribe Invitational gets underway in two weeks, Friday-Saturday Aug. 28-29, with two matches Friday and four on Saturday. W&M hosts Gardner-Webb Friday night at 7 p.m., before taking on La Salle on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Norfolk State Saturday at 7 p.m.
