WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 25, 2015)—The William and Mary lacrosse team closed out the 2015 season with a 16-7 loss to No. 17 James Madison on Senior Day at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Although W&M (5-11, 1-5) trailed by just two goals at halftime, JMU (13-4, 5-1) outscored the Tribe, 10-3, during the final 30 minutes.
Senior Ellen Shaffrey wrapped up her outstanding career with a record-setting performance, as she totaled four draw controls to become the program's all-time leader in the statistical category for a career (156) and a single season (57). Additionally, the Charlottesville, Va., native totaled a team-high four points (3g, 1a) and finishes her career with 109 points.
Sophomore Shannon Quinn added a pair of goals, while junior Zoe Boger equaled a season high with six draw controls.
The contest, which was played in a steady rain, was close early, as the Dukes held a narrow 3-2 lead midway through the first half. Quinn (28:23) and Shaffrey (18:02) provided the early scores.
While the Dukes rattled off three unanswered goals to build a 6-2 lead, Shaffrey (2:11) and freshman Danielle Palmucci (0:42) both found the back of the cage late in the stanza to narrow the deficit to just two at the intermission.
However, JMU began the second half with a 6-1 run that covered nearly 19 minutes to build a 12-5 advantage.
W&M got goals from Boger (11:11) and Shaffrey (3:54) down the stretch but was unable to narrow the margin to less than six the rest of the way.
Although the College owned a 14-12 edge in draw controls, JMU outshot W&M, 31-15, and held a 22-12 advantage in ground balls.
Jaci Gordon led the Dukes with six points (3g, 3a), while Stephanie Finley (4g, 1a) and Betsy Angel (3g, 1a) also provided offensive production.
