WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 19, 2015)—The William and Mary lacrosse team fell to Towson, 20-9, at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday afternoon.
Although W&M (5-10, 1-4) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Towson (8-7, 3-3) responded with eight unanswered goals en route to securing the win.
Sophomore Shannon Quinn led W&M with a team-high three goals, while senior Ellen Shaffrey totaled three points (2g, 1a) and a six draw controls. With the impressive effort, Shaffrey now needs just two draw controls to break the program's career record (153).
Defensively, senior Allison Henry caused a pair of turnovers, while sophomore Abby Junior recorded a caused turnover and five ground balls.
Although Towson outshot W&M, 34-26, many of the other statistical categories were even, as both teams totaled 20 ground balls and TU owned a 17-14 edge in ground balls. Additionally, the Tribe committed one fewer turnover than the Tigers and posted one more save.
Things looked good for the College early, as goals by Quinn and senior Amanda Johnson (25:33) gave the Tribe a 2-0 lead.
While W&M held Towson scoreless for the initial 12:48 of the contest, TU closed the half with eight unanswered goals to build an 8-2 advantage.
The Tribe opened the second half with a 3-1 run to narrow the margin to 9-5. Junior Michelle Goss (28:38), freshman Abby Corkum (25:42) and senior Kaleigh Noon (22:22) all scored during the stretch.
However, TU countered with a 9-2 run to build an 11-goal advantage with less than eight minutes remaining.
W&M cut the deficit to 10 on multiple occasions following goals by Quinn and Shaffrey but was unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
Samantha Brookhart (3g, 3a) and Andi Ramyond (2g, 4a) led the Tigers with six points apiece.
The Tribe will wrap up the 2015 season when it hosts No. 18 James Madison for Senior Day next Saturday at 1 p.m.
