WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 17, 2015)—The William and Mary lacrosse team fell to Delaware, 13-7, in its conference home opener on Friday evening at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Although W&M (5-9, 1-3) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, UD (11-5, 4-1) held the Tribe to just one goal during a span of more than 31 minutes en route to rattling off a pivotal 10-1 run.
The College outscored Delaware following the run but was unable to complete the comeback bid.
Senior Ellen Shaffrey led W&M with three points (2g, 1) and four draw controls, as she eclipsed the career 100-point mark and now needs just eight more draw controls to break W&M's all-time record (153).
Defensively, sophomore Julia McGrath totaled a pair of caused turnovers and two ground balls.
The Tribe jumped out an early 2-0 advantage in the opening 2:05 with a pair of goals by Shaffrey. However, junior Courtney Taylor's goal off an assist from sophomore Abby Junior with 22:27 showing was W&M's only other score of the half as UD built an 8-3 advantage at the intermission.
Delaware added two more goals early in the second half to complete the 10-1 run and take its biggest lead of the contest, 10-3, with 27:21 remaining.
The College answered by scoring three of the next four goals to narrow the margin to five, 11-6, but was unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
While both teams totaled 11 draw controls apiece, the Blue Hens outshot W&M, 22-14, and held a narrow 17-16 edge in ground balls.
Casey Lyons led Delaware with four points (2g, 2a), while Caitlin McCartney added a game-high three goals.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Towson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
