Baseball Drops Game Two 5-1 at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The William and Mary baseball team suffered a 5-1 setback at UNCW on Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks scored fivev unanswered runs to take the series. With the win the Seahawks improve to 24-8, 7-1 in CAA play, while the Tribe falls to 14-17, 6-5 in league action.

Junior Josh Smith and freshman Ryan Hall each had multi-hit games for the Tribe in the setback. Smith provided the Tribe's lone RBI with a double in the top of the fourth inning.

William & Mary jumped on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, sophomore Tim Hoehn started the rally with a single to left center field. Smith followed with a double down the left field line, scoring Hoehn from first. The rally continued as Hall singled, putting runners on the corners. However, the Seahawks were able to turn a double play, keeping the score 1-0.

UNCW tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Zach Shields led off the inning with a single, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Casey Golden. With one out, the Tribe elected to intentionally walk Gavin Stupenski. With two outs, Terrance Connelly singled up the middle, tying the score 1-1.

The Seahawks took the lead with four runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Golden started the rally with a one-out single, moving to second on a stolen base. With two outs, Luke Dunlap doubled down the left field line, giving the Seahawks a 2-1 lead. UNCW added three more runs on back-to-back-to-back singles from Brian Mims, Andy Austin, and Kennard McDowell, giving UNCW a 5-1 lead. 

Sophomore Nick Brown made the start and recorded his sixth quality start of the season, but was saddled with the hard luck loss. He tossed 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits. He had five strikeouts in the contest.

The College and the Seahawks conclude the their three-game series with a game tomorrow, Sunday, April 11. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
