Baseball Falls To Campbell in Game One of Doubleheader

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The William and Mary baseball team dropped game one of a doubleheader at Campbell 8-6 in Buies Creek, N.C. on Wednesday afternoon. With the decision the Tribe falls to 4-3, while the Camels improve to 9-2.

Junior Charley Gould led the Tribe with a 3-for-4 day, driving in a run. Sophomore Matthew Tilley drove in four runs with his first career homer, a grand-slam, in the top of the second inning.

Campbell opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Cedric Mullins led off the inning with a walk, moving to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Mullins came around to score, an unearned run, on a groundout by Steven Leonard.

W&M responded in a big way in the top of the second inning. Gould led of the frame with a single through the middle, moving to second when freshman Ryan Hall followed suit with a single. After an out, sophomore Ryder Miconi walked loading the bases. The next batter, Tilley bolted a grand-slam over the left field wall. Tilley's first career blast gave the Tribe a 4-1 advantage.

The Camels knotted the score with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Brian Taylor led off the inning with a bunt single, moving to second on a single by Mullins. Leonard was then hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases. Anthony Lopes followed with a single that plated two runs. A bases loaded walk to Seth LaRue tied the scored at 4-4.

CU retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. JD Andreesen led of the frame with a double down the left field. With one out, Austin Beard reached second on a Tribe throwing error, allowing Andreesen to score. The unearned run gave the Camels a 5-4 lead.

However, the Tribe rallied and took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out rally. Freshman Cullen Large led off the frame with a single, moving to second on a two-out stolen base. With two outs, Gould singled down the right field line, tying the score 5-5. The two out rally continued as Hall singled, putting runners on first and second. Sophomore Tim Hoehn, followed, with a single up the middle, giving the Tribe a 6-5 advantage.

Campbell stormed right back and added three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kyle Leady led off the inning with a single, moving to third on a double from LaRue. A pitch then hit Cole Hallum, loading bases. Andreesen followed with a sacrifice fly, tying the score. Both runners moved up on a double steal, before Brian Taylor hit another sacrifice fly, scoring LaRue. Beard then followed with a double down the left field line, giving the Camels an 8-6 lead.

The Camels added a pair of insurance runs in the home half of the eighth inning. Leonard led off the frame with a single moving to second on a groundout. Kyle Leady hit a one-out single down the left line plating Leonard. Leady moved to a second on stolen base, before moving to third on groundout. A two-out singe from Hallum pushed the CU lead to 10-6.

Junior Aaron Fernandez made the start for the Tribe tossing 2.1 innings allowing four runs, just three earned, with one strikeout. Freshman Christopher Lohr came in in relief and tossed 3.2 innings, allowing an unearned run, striking out three batters. Classmate Michael Toner tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing five runs, he was charged with his first loss.

The Green and Gold and Camels will conclude their doubleheader with game two. The first pitch is scheduled in approximately 30 minutes.
