WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 25, 2015)—The William and Mary lacrosse team had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 16-6 loss to No. 5 Virginia at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Wednesday evening.
Although W&M (4-5) trailed by just one, 5-4, midway through the opening half, Virginia (7-4) utilized a 10-1 run en route to earning its fourth consecutive win.
Sophomore Shannon Quinn led the Tribe with three goals, while junior Zoe Boger, junior Michelle Goss and sophomore Lindsey Jenks all added one goal apiece.
Senior Amanda Johnson totaled a team-high three draw controls, while senior Ellen Shaffrey provided two draw controls to move into a tie for second on W&M's career list with 134.
Defensively, sophomore Abby Junior registered three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while senior Allison Henry tallied three caused turnovers.
It was a tightly contested game early, as W&M answered UVA's early scores on multiple occasions. After the Cavaliers built two-goal advantages on four occasions, the Tribe narrowed the margin to just one each time and trailed just 5-4 with 12:51 left in the first half. Quinn provided two of those early goals, while Boger and Jenks also found the back of the cage during the stretch. However, Virginia closed the initial stanza with three unanswered scores to take an 8-4 lead into the locker room.
After trading goals during the first three minutes of the second half, the Cavaliers pulled away with a 6-0 run.
Quinn provided the Tribe's lone goal during the remainder of the contest with 15:24 remaining.
Although both teams finished the contest with 19 ground balls, Virginia held a 17-7 advantage in draw controls.
Casey Bocklet led UVA with eight points (5g, 3a), while Courtney Swan totaled a game-high seven draw controls.
The Tribe will return to action when it closes out its non-conference slate at Virginia Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m.
