WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 22, 2015)—The William and Mary lacrosse team extended its winning streak to four games with a lopsided 22-3 victory against Gardner-Webb at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday afternoon.
W&M (4-4) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest and pulled away with a 16-0 run that covered nearly 38 minutes midway through the matchup.
The Tribe utilized a balanced scoring attack, as 14 different players found the back of the cage. Leading the way was senior Ellen Shaffrey who posted a team-high five goals – all of which came in the first half – for the second consecutive game. The Charlottesville, Va., native also added three draw controls and four ground balls.
Senior Amanda Johnson also came up big offensively with a hat trick, while freshman Abby Corkum totaled a team-high six points on two goals and four assists.
As a team, the College owned a 20-7 advantage in draws and a 22-13 margin in ground balls. Additionally, W&M's defense caused 12 turnovers and allowed just seven shots.
After W&M built a 5-0 lead to begin the matchup, Gardner-Webb (0-9) responded with a pair of goals to narrow the margin to three with 15:33 remaining in the first half.
However, the Tribe held the Bulldogs scoreless for nearly 38 minutes as it rattled off 16 unanswered goals en route to earning the lopsided win. GWU's lone goal during the final 45:32 was scored by Amanda Steinmuller with 7:35 remaining.
Steinmuller totaled two goals for the Bulldogs, while Monique Martin scored once.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts No. 8 Virginia on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
