NORFOLK, Va. (March 15, 2015)—The William and Mary lacrosse team earned its second consecutive victory with a 15-9 triumph at Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon.
Although W&M (2-4) led by just one, 5-4, midway through the first half, it utilized a 10-2 run en route to securing the lopsided win. Additionally, the Tribe owned a 19-7 advantage in draw controls and held the Monarchs (6-3) scoreless for a stretch of 32:44.
The College utilized a balanced attack offensively as 10 different players found the back of the cage for the second straight game. Senior Ellen Shaffrey (3g, 1a) and freshman Abby Corkum (2g, 2a) led the way with four points apiece – all of which came during the first half. Shaffrey also added six draw controls. Freshman Danielle Palmucci (2g, 1a) and junior Zoe Boger (1g, 2a) also contributed three points apiece, while Boger's outstanding stat line included six draw controls, five ground balls and a caused turnover.
Sophomore Alex Lista was impressive in goal, as she came off the bench to allow just four goals and total eight saves in 41:19 minutes of action.
W&M jumped out to an early 2-0 lead less than a minute into the contest with goals by Corkum (29:31) and Shaffrey (29:06).
Although ODU tied the count at 2-2 following consecutive goals by Connor Carson, the Tribe rattled off three unanswered scores to build a 5-2 advantage with 16:50 remaining in the opening half. Boger (20:15), sophomore Shannon Quinn (17:03) and Corkum (16:50) all found the back of the cage during the stretch.
While a quick pair of goals by the Monarchs narrowed the margin to just one, 5-4, a few minutes later, W&M closed the initial stanza with a pivotal 6-2 run to lead, 11-6, at halftime.
The College controlled the first part of the second half and recorded four unanswered goals to build a comfortable 15-6 advantage. Palmucci provide the first two goals (29:30, 28:21), while senior Amanda Johnson (15:56) and sophomore Lindsey Jenks (13:48) closed out the Tribe's 10-2 run.
ODU finally ended its scoreless drought with a goal by Christina Rea with just 5:25 remaining. A pair of goals by the Monarchs in the waning minutes provided the final margin.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Richmond next Friday at 7 p.m. It will mark W&M's first home game in more than a month.
