ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Feb. 28, 2015)—The William and Mary lacrosse team fell at Navy, 12-9, on Saturday afternoon.
Although W&M (0-3) trailed by just one goal at the intermission, 7-6, Navy opened the second half with four unanswered scores en route to improving to 5-1.
Senior Amanda Johnson led the Tribe with three goals, which equaled her career high, while freshman Abby Corkum posted three points on two goals and an assist.
Senior Ellen Shaffrey came up big on draws once again and totaled a team-high four draw controls.
Junior goalie Meredith Crizer also played well and came off the bench to record five saves while allowing just three goals in the final 27:12.
As a team, W&M scored on nine of its 16 shots and had just two of its attempts on goal stopped by Navy's goalie.
The contest was close in the first half, as Navy was unable to build more than a three-goal lead during the opening 30 minutes of action.
After the Mids scored the game's first two goals, Shaffrey put W&M on the scoreboard at the 26:08 mark.
Although Navy answered by scoring three of the next four goals to build a 5-2 advantage midway through the half, the Tribe countered with a 3-1 run of its own. Sophomore Abby Junior (14:54), Corkum (7:35) and freshman McKinley Wade (6:07) all found the back of the cage during the stretch.
Each team scored once more to go to the locker room with Navy holding a narrow 7-6 lead.
The Mids began the second half with four unanswered goals to extend their advantage to 11-6 with 18:21 remaining. Although W&M outscored Navy, 3-1, during the remainder of the contest, it was unable to get closer than the final margin.
Loren Generi led Navy with four points (3g, 1a), eight draw controls, six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
As a team, Navy held advantages in shots (27-16), ground balls (22-15) and draw controls (14-9).
The Tribe will return to action when it plays at No. 13 Louisville next Saturday.
