DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2015) – Squaring off against a top-10 ranked opponent for the second consecutive week, the William and Mary lacrosse team fell at No. 8 Duke, 17-7, on Sunday afternoon.
Despite the setback, W&M outscored the Blue Devils in the second half (7-6) and owned a significant advantage in draw controls (16-10). The Tribe was especially dominant on draws during the final 30 minutes, winning 10 of 14 following intermission. Senior Ellen Shaffrey played a big part of that success, as she posted a career-high eight draw controls – just one shy of equaling the single-game school record set by Molly Wannen in the win at Old Dominion in 2011.
Freshman Emma MacLeod led the College (0-2) with three goals, all coming in the second half, while classmate Meaghan Brophy scored twice.
Sophomore goalie Alex Lista was also impressive and came off the bench to record 10 saves.
Although Duke (5-0) scored the contest's first 14 goals, W&M charged back with a quick 5-0 run midway through the second half. All three of MacLeod's goals came during the six-minute stretch, while senior Allison Henry and junior Michelle Goss also found the back of the cage during the impressive run.
Despite a pair of goals by Brophy during the waning minutes, W&M was unable to narrow the margin to less than nine during the remainder of the contest.
Kerrin Maurer led Duke with five points (3g, 2a), while Chelsea Landon also posted a hat trick with three goals.
The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Navy next Saturday at noon.
