Men's Soccer Falls to No. 23 Hofstra in Double Overtime 1-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Playing through strong winds and rain, the William & Mary men's soccer team battled No. 23 Hofstra, but fell 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday night at Wanner Stadium in Williamsburg. With the decision the Tribe drops to 4-4-2, 1-2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Pride improve to 8-2-0, 2-0 in league action.

Hofstra had a pair of chances in the first eight minutes of the first half. The first shot of the game from Harri Hawkins, who pushed his chance wide in the third minute. Moments later, Rory Murphy fired a shot on target, but redshirt freshman goalkeeper, Sam Onyeador made the save.

The Tribe had its first chance of the game in the 10th minute. Senior Jackson Eskay was able to clear some space and fire his shot on target, but it was turned away by Patric Pray.

Both teams had shots down the stretch of the first half, but none of the chances were on target. At the break, Hofstra held a 5-2 advantage in shots.

The Pride put three shots on goal in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Nino Alfonso put a shot on frame that was stopped by Onyeador, before Joseph Holland a chance that ended in the same result. The final shot on target came in the 87th minute, and was saved by redshirt junior Mac Phillips.

W&M had two shots in the second half, but neither of them were on target. Jackson Eskay had his chance blocked, and freshman Antonio Bustamante pushed his shot wide.

The Tribe had the first chance of the extra period. Sophomore William Eskay cleared some space in the 92nd minute, and fired, but again Pray had the answer. Hofstra's only shot of the period was blocked.

Hofstra scored the golden goal in the 102nd minute. On a counter attack, Nino Alfonso found Mani Walcott, who was one-versus-one against the keeper. Walcott finished across the box and into the right corner of the goal.

This was the fifth time this season W&M has played a overtime match. However, this was the first loss this season, which moves the Tribe's overtime record to 2-1-2.

Onyeador made his first career start in the match. He turned away three shots, before leaving with an injury. Phillips came in for the final 29 minutes and recorded one save.

Hofstra outshot W&M 11-5 in the match, which included a 5-2 mark in shots on goal. Jackson Eskay led the Green and Gold with two shots.

After a seven day layoff, W&M hits the road for the a pair of matches. The Tribe travels to Northeastern (Oct. 10), before heading to James Madison (Oct. 14). The Green and Gold returns home to take on UNCW on Saturday, Oct. 17.
