W&M Hockey Goes to Philadelphia for Two

The William & Mary field hockey team heads back out on the road this weekend, playing a pair of games in the City of Brotherly Love.  The Tribe will take on CAA-rival Drexel on Friday night at 6 p.m., then face off with St. Joseph's Sunday at noon.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M is 5-8 on the year and 1-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, after a tough 2-1 loss to Northeastern last weekend in the final 10 seconds.  Senior Pippin Saunders (Mittagong, NSW) had the Tribe's score, lifting her season total to nine goals and three assists.  Sophomores Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) and Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.) are tied for second on the team with 12 points each, Lloyd's on six goals and Menges with three goals and six assists.  On defense, Booter Ellis (Laurel, Del.) has a team-high three defensive saves, and senior Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) has made 55 saves with a 2.62 GAA.

Scouting the Dragons
Drexel begins the weekend at 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the league, with a win over Northeastern.  The Dragons are being led by Jessica McCarthy (4g, 2a) and Idrienne Walker (5g) with 10 points each, while Megan Wiest (5g,1a) is close behind.  Defensively, Drexel's Alison McCardell has three defensive saves, and Erin Gilchrist (2.85 GAA, 40 saves) and Ainslie Rhoads (3.39 GAA, 36 saves) are splitting time in goal.

Scouting the Hawks
St. Joseph's is 5-7 on the year, and 3-2 in the Atlantic-10.  The Hawks' top offensive threat is Anna Willocks, with nine goals and three assists, and three other players have all surpassed 10 points this season.  In goal, Amelia Deibler has been the sole keeper for St. Joe's, making 58 saves against a 2.49 GAA.

The Series
- W&M moved ahead of Drexel in the all-time series, 8-7, last year after a 2-0 shut-out in Williamsburg.  Before that, each team had a seven-game winning streak, the Tribe first, then the Dragons.  The last Green and Gold win in Philadelphia was in 2005.

- This is just the third all-time meeting between W&M and St. Joseph's, and the rubber match with the series tied 1-1.  The Tribe won 3-1 on the road in 1992, and when the return trip finally came in 2008, the Hawks prevailed 3-2 in overtime.

News and Notes
- The Tribe scored both of its goals against Towson on penalty strokes, bring the season total to four stroke goals on five attempts.  The four goals is tied for third all-time with the 1999 team, behind only the nine scored in 1995 and seven in 1993.  The five attempts are the fourth-most in school history, behind those three other teams.

- Junior Amanda McAteer (King of Prussia, Pa.) has scored two of her three penalty attempts, both numbers the fourth-most ever.  The school record in both categories is seven, by Saskia Bensdorp '98 in 1995.

- W&M was rated No. 28 in the first rating percentage index release, matching its best-ever rating in the RPI since the NCAA began keeping it for field hockey in 2006.

- This season saw the third time since 1993 that W&M has played two different teams with the same ranking within 10 days of each other.  The Tribe played No. 4 Duke on Sunday, Sept. 13, and No. 4 Virginia on Monday, Sept. 21.  The record for shortest seperation was three days in 1997, when W&M played No. 2 North Carolina and No. 2 Virginia.  The first time it happened was in 1994, with matches against No. 2 Northwestern and No. 2 Virginia coming a week apart.

- Saunders is rapidly closing in on several significant career milestones.  She has 21 career assists, tied for second-most all-time and just four from the record set last year by former teammate Emma Clifton '15.  Saunders also has 34 goals for W&M, the most since Hall-of-Famer Ann Ekberg '03 graduated with 54.  If Saunders can get to 40, she'll take over sole possession of fifth on the all-time scoring list.  Finally, in points, Saunders has 89, just four away from the all-time top-five in that category.

- Lloyd's hat trick against Ohio was the first for W&M since the 2012 season opener, when Christine Johnson '13 scored four goals.  That performance earned her CAA Player of the Week honors.

- Saunders scored twice in just 15 seconds against Central Michigan.
