Jackson Eskay Scores Twice as Men's Soccer Downs No. 10 Elon 4-1

Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior Jackson Eskay scored a pair of goals as the William & Mary men's soccer team dropped No. 10 Elon 4-1 on a rainy Wednesday night in Williamsburg. Senior Ryan Flesch and Antonio Bustamante scored the other two goals in the match for the Tribe. With the win, the Green and Gold improve to 4-3-2, 1-1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association, while Elon falls to 8-2-0, 2-1-0 in league action.

W&M jumped out of the gates on the offensive and fired a pair of shots in five-minute stretch in the opening minutes of the game. In the sixth minute, junior Reilly Maw put a shot on frame that was stopped by Elon goalie Matthew Jegier. The second chance came on a header shot from senior Ryan Perry, but it sailed wide.

The Tribe took an early lead and never looked back with a marker in the 17th minute. After Maw drew a foul just inside of midfield, Flesch lined up a free kick from distance. The attempt bounced just inside the six and went untouched into the right side of the goal. Flesch's first goal of the season gave the Tribe an early 1-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, W&M doubled its lead in the 22nd minute. Freshman Marcel Berry sent a feed to Jackson Eskay, waiting in the middle of the box. The senior buried his shot into the lower left side of the goal, lifting W&M to a 2-0 advantage.

W&M just missed a chance to extend its lead in the 48th minute. Again, Jackson Eskay got free and put a shot on target. This time, Jegier was able to make the stop for the Phoenix.

Elon had a pair of chances moments apart in the 49th and 50th minute. Samuel McBride sailed a shot high, before Luis Argudo clanked his shot off of the post.

The Phoenix had a golden opportunity to bring the game within a goal when they were rewarded a penalty kick in the 66th minute. Cooper Vandermass-Peeler lined up the PK, but sailed his shot just over the crossbar.

Eleven minutes later, the Tribe made Elon pay for the missed PK and found its third goal of the night. Again Berry started the play with a dish to Bustamante just outside of the goal box. The freshman lined up his shot and scored into the lower right corner of the net. His fifth goal of the season lifted the Tribe to a 3-0 advantage.

W&M put the exclamation point on the victory with its fourth tally of the game in the 80th minute. Berry, who recorded his third assist of the game, found Jackson Eskay again, who took a few steps, before burying his chance off of the far post and into the back of the night.

Elon did get one goal back in the 81st minute. After a failed clearance attempt, Jaiden Fortune found James Brace, who then dished to Amir Berkane, who scored into the empty net, cutting the lead to 4-1.

After the first marker, the Phoenix brought 10 men forward to try to continue cutting into the lead. Elon mustered three shots, but only one on target. That shot came from Nichola O'Callaghan and had to be cleared off of the goalline by Perry for the team save.

Despite the score, each team fired 12 shots during the match, however W&M held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Jackson Eskay fired a match-high four shots, while Bustamante recorded three.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Mac Phillips recorded his fourth win of the season. He recorded one save in the match.

For the second time this season, a Tribe player recorded three assists in a game with Berry's three helpers. Berry's first assist, which came in the 22nd minute, was the first point of his collegiate career. Earlier this season, Maw recorded three assists in the win against Liberty.

With the win, it marked the first time since Sept. 24, 2013 that the Tribe had knocked off a ranked opponent. That night, the Green and Gold edged No. 1 North Carolina 1-0.

The match was delayed a total of 30-minutes in the 58th minute, because of inclement weather in the Williamsburg area.

The Green and Gold returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 when they welcome No. 23 Hofstra to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m.
