The William and Mary field hockey team picked up its first win on Friday afternoon, shooting past Central Michigan 2-1 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Tribe improved to 1-2 on the year with the victory, while the Chippewas fell to 0-3 overall.
Box ScoreThe Tribe dominated play around the goal, out-shooting CMU 25-6 and earning a 9-4 edge on corners. Despite that, the first 50 minutes were scoreless, before W&M broke through in the 54th minute. Off of a corner, sophomore
Olivia Hajek (Charlottesville, Va.) corraled the rebound of the Tribe's first shot and blasted it back past the keeper for the score. It was her first of the season, and proved to be the game-winner.
Six minutes later, the Green and Gold added an insurance goal off of another corner. This time, the ball cruised through the sticks of senior captain
Emma Clifton (Loomberah, NSW) and freshman
Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.) before junior
Peyton Smith (Richmond, Va.) rocketed a shot into the boards. It was Smith's second goal of the year, as well as the first assist for Menges. Clifton's assist was the 18th of her career, lifting her into a tie for fifth all-time and just three behind the career record. On defense, junior
Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) made three saves while only allowing one goal, and Clifton also chipped in with a defensive save.
William and Mary is back in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on No. 17 Michigan at 1 p.m.
