The William and Mary field hockey team wrapped up its most successful weekend of the year on Sunday, blanking Davidson on the road 2-0. The Tribe improved to 3-7 overall with its two wins this week, while the Wildcats fell to 1-8 on the year.
Box ScoreW&M outshot the host team 18-7 on the afternoon and had an 8-1 advantage on penalty corners, but for the first 10 minutes, it looked like the game would go the other way. Davidson had the first corner of the game, and took six of its shots in the first 12 minutes, but a strong defensive stand by junior goalkeeper
Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) kept the scoreboard blank. Savage would end up making four saves on the day, all in the first half, as the Tribe defense kept Davidson from even trying a shot after the intermission.
On the opposite end of the field, senior
Lindsey Buckheit (East Greenwich, R.I.) put the Tribe on the board at the start of the 16th minute, corraling a pass from sophomore
Mary Flick (Moorestown, N.J.) and touching it past the defense. It was Flick's first career assist, and gave Buckheit a team-leading two goals this weekend.
That tally would prove to be the game-winner, but W&M would tack on an insurance goal in the 59th minute. Off of its final penalty corner, the Tribe got the ball in to senior
Navneet Singh (Auckland, N.Z.), and sophomore
Maria Pastor (Burke, Va.) eluded the defense to re-direct Singh's shot in past the goalkeeper. It was Pastor's second goal of the year, matching her total from last season when she was named to the CAA All-Rookie team, and it was also Singh's second assist of the season.
William and Mary returns home next weekend to start play in the Colonial Athletic Association. First up is Towson on Friday night, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m., before the Tribe welcomes defending champion Delaware Sunday at 12 p.m.
