School-Record Toss Opens IC4A Weekend for W&M Men's Track and Field

The William and Mary men's track and field team opened competitions at the IC4A Championships Saturday, shattering one school record and having three more entries in the all-time lists.  In the team standings, the Tribe earned one All-East honor and is tied for 24th overall.  Cornell leads the team race with 30 points, five in front of Liberty.

The day began with the weight throw, where redshirt-sophomore Brian Waterfield (Chesapeake, Va.) smashed the school record and set a lifetime-best in each of his first three throws to place ninth overall.  Waterfield started with an 18.02m (59-1.5) throw, which was a lifetime-best by six inches.  His second throw went 18.30m (60-0.25), beating the school record of 59-5 set first in 1984 by Marlon Mattis '85 and again in 1996 by Adam Williams '96.  Waterfield's third throw was his best of the day, 18.53m (60-9.5), which would end up placing him ninth and just one spot out of All-East honors.  Sophomore Taylor Frenia (Virginia Beach, Va.) was 16th overall, throwing 17.64m (57-10.5).  That ranks as the 12th-best competition in school history.

Next up was the 5,000m run, where freshman Trevor Sleight (Asheville, N.C.) timed 14:22.06 to take eighth place and earn his first All-East honors.  That also ranks him 15th in school history among athletes and was less than five seconds off of the freshman record indoors.  Sophomore Ryan Gousse (Apopka, Fla.) finished seventh in his heat and 17th overall, stopping the clock in 14:43.16.

In the distance medley relay, the Tribe's team of Nathan Thomas (Brentwood, Tenn.), Jomar Aryee (Hillside, N.J.), Ricky Cappetta (Stafford, Va.), and Nathaniel Hermsmeier (Charlottesville, Va.) advanced to Sunday's finals with a ninth-place 10:07.24.  Right after that, the 4x800m relay team of David Gunnerson (Yorktown, Va.), Mark Moran (McLean, Va.), Michael Wilkens (Woodbury, N.Y.), and Troy Sevachko (Centreville, Va.) ran 7:38.66, the 10th-fastest time ever, but just missed advancing by less than half-a-second in 10th place.  It was the fastest 4x800m for W&M indoors in more than 15 years, since the 1998 IC4A Championships.

Events begin Sunday morning for William and Mary at 11 a.m., with the men's pole vault.
