COLLEGE PARK, Md. (March 5, 2014)—The William and Mary lacrosse team fell at No. 3 Maryland, 19-3, on Wednesday evening.
Although the contest was tied at 2-2 early in the first half, the Terps (7-0) outscored W&M (1-3), 17-1, during the remainder of the contest to remain undefeated.
Junior Ellen Shaffrey led the Tribe with two goals and five draw controls, while senior Jenna Dougherty and sophomore Zoe Boger added a goal and an assist, respectively. Senior Hannah Clarke came up big defensively with four caused turnovers and two ground balls, while senior goalie Colleen Nofi totaled a season-high 12 saves.
After UM took a 2-0 lead in the opening two minutes of the contest, W&M responded with free position goals by Dougherty (25:57) and Shaffrey (24:34) to knot the score. However, the College's only other goal of the contest came from Shaffrey with 3:16 remaining in the first half.
Although the Terps held a 13-11 edge in draw controls, W&M owned a 6-3 advantage in the second half. Maryland also outshot the Tribe, 37-13, and held a 15-8 advantage in ground balls.
Kelly McPartland (4g, 1a) and Taylor Cummings (2g, 3a) led Maryland with five points apiece, while Cummings also totaled a team-high four draw controls.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts No. 8 Virginia next Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Cavaliers will be the third top-10 team W&M has faced in its opening five games this season.
