SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Feb. 9, 2014) – The William and Mary men's gymnastics team nearly posted the best score in school history and broke the program's record on parallel bars en route to earning a 420.45-407.1 victory at Springfield College on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to breaking the school record on parallel bars (71.05), W&M also posted season highs on floor (71.2) and pommel horse (70.55).
Individually, senior Landon Funiciello broke his own school record on parallel bars (15.15) and nearly matched his school standard on rings with a 15.9, as the Baldwinsville, N.Y., native won both events. Sophomore Neal Courter also registered a number of impressive performances and claimed titles on floor, vault and high bar.
W&M posted a season-high 71.2 on floor, as Courter (14.65), Funiciello (14.5) and junior J.J. Jindra (14.15) earned the top three scores in the event.
The College also tallied a season high on pommel horse (70.55) and was led by junior Jason Wang who placed third with a 14.95. Sophomore Keaton Ackerman (14.6) and junior Peter Ten Eyck (14.2) also came up big with season highs.
Funiciello highlighted the Tribe's performances on rings and nearly equaled his own school record with a 15.9 to help the squad earn a 68.95.
Courter (15.0) and junior Michael Deitz (14.3) both matched season highs on vault to place first and third, respectively, as the duo helped the Tribe tally a 69.75 in the event.
Funiciello's winning score of 15.15 on parallel bars broke his own school record and helped propel the Tribe to a school record 71.05 in the event. Senior Sam Patterson (14.55) and Jindra (14.3) placed second and third, respectively, and both matched career highs.
W&M also claimed the top three scores on high bar en route to posting a season-high 68.95. Courter won his third event title of the afternoon with a season-best 14.15, while Deitz equaled a season high (14.0) to finish second. Jindra placed third with a 13.8.
Jindra was the Tribe's lone all-around competitor and earned an 81.05.
The Tribe will return to action when it competes at Navy next Sunday at 3 p.m.
