WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William and Mary men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to in-state rival Old Dominion on Tuesday night in its home finale at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Old Dominion's Tyler Edwards tallied the game's only marker in the 57th minute. With the decision the Tribe falls to 5-10-1, while the Monarchs improve to 7-4-1.
W&M had the game's first chance just seconds into the match. Senior Michael Teiman sent a long ball that sent classmate Chris Albiston free. Albiston, who was charging down the left side of the pitch, unleashed a shot that sailed just over the crossbar.
The Tribe outshot the Monarchs 7-2 in the first 20 minutes of the match. The Green and Gold had chances from sophomore Reilly Maw, who sent a header right into the chest of ODU goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen, and seniors Josh West, Marcus Luster, and Albiston also had chances during the stretch.
Freshman William Eskay had the College's best chance of the first half in the 19th minute. Off of a throw-in by Maw, William Eskay was set free alone in the box. He fired a quick shot, but Tisenhausen was able to recover and make the save for the Monarchs.
At the half, Old Dominion had rebound to knot the shot count at 8-8, but neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first period.
The Monarchs opened the second half with a flurry, including the match's lone goal. Cole Stringer had the first chance on a header that he pushed wide in the 48th minute. Moments later, Edwards turned a shot that approached the frame, but it hit the post.
In the 57th minute, the Monarchs found the match's only goal. Jesse Miralrio won a ball from the Tribe defense and beat a handful of defenders, before sending a cross to Edwards. Edwards, who was waiting at the middle of the 18, fired his shot into the left corner of the goal. The second goal of the season for Edwards gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
W&M tried to find the equalizer before the end of the match, and outshot ODU 9-2 following the goal. The Tribe had a golden opportunity with just four minutes left. Junior Jackson Eskay cleared some space and uncorked a shot on target that skimmed off of the cross bar.
Despite the result, the College outshot Old Dominion 17-13 including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Alex Harrington, who was making his first start of the season, made one save on the night. Tiesenhausen stopped six shots for the Monarchs. West had a team-high three shots for the Tribe.
The Tribe concludes its regular season schedule on the road with a pair of matches. W&M travels to Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 25 for a 6 p.m. kickoff, before traveling to James Madison on Wednesday, Oct. 29 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
