HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The William and Mary men's soccer team fell 3-0 at Hofstra on Saturday night in a Colonial Athletic Association match. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 4-8-1, 1-2-1 in CAA play, while Hofstra improves to 7-3-2, 2-0-0 in league action.
Hofstra had the first two chances of the match and the 11th and 12th minute. The first came on a shot from Rory Murphy that sailed high. Moments later, Maid Memic pushed his shot wide of the cage.
W&M came storming back into its offensive third with its first real threat of the evening. Senior Chris Albiston uncorked a shot that was blocked by a Pride defender and out of play in the 19th minute. On the ensuing corner kick, the Green and Gold was whistled for a foul, ending the threat.
The Pride also put the first shot on target in the match, midway through the first period. Meshack Addy Eshun launched a shot on frame. However, senior goalkeeper Bennett Jones was there for his first stop of the night.
Hofstra jumped on the board first in the 38th minute. Pablo Casado sent a pass that found Memic. Memic collected the ball and volleyed his shot into the top right corner of the net. His fifth marker of the season, gave the Pride a 1-0 lead.
The Pride didn't let up and charged right back down the field. The attack was able to force a corner kick, and Addy Eshun was able to put his shot on targert. Jones was there for the stop for W&M.
W&M tried to find the equalizer before halftime, and had one chance at it late in the first half. Freshman William Eskay cleared some space and fired a shot that was heading towards the goal. However, a Pride defender stepped in front for the block and Hofstra averted further damage.
Hofstra doubled its lead in the 59th minute. Murphy sent a cross from the left corner of the goal box that found Eshun Addy. Eshun Addy connected and put the ball and the back of the net. His first goal of the season gave Hofstra a 2-0 lead.
W&M came right back down the field and nearly got one back seconds after the goal. Senior Josh West fired a shot on frame, but Hofstra goalie Patric Pray made his first save of the night.
The Pride added a goal in the 64th minute. Danny Elliot found Memic, who was 30-yards out. Memic uncorked his shot from there and found the back of the goal. His second goal of the night, gave Hofstra a 3-0 advantage.
W&M didn't go away and continued to battle until the final whistle. Senior Aaron Baldwin put a shot on frame that was turned away by Pray. On the ensuing corner kick, redshirt freshman Riley Spain was able to fire a shot, but it sailed high. Moments later, redshirt freshman Alfonso Speed was able to get his head on a cross, but his attempt sailed wide of the frame.
Hofstra out shot W&M 9-6 including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Jones made three saves and net, while senior Alex Harrington also played 18 minutes, not facing a shot. Baldwin fired a team-high two shots for the Green and Gold.
The College concludes its two-match road swing at the College of Charleston on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Kickoff for that match is set for 7 p.m.
