W&M Hockey Falls to Ohio, 2-1

The William and Mary field hockey team dropped a tight match to Ohio on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 on a neutral field despite outshooting its opponents.  The Tribe evened its record at 2-2 on the year, while the Bobcats improved to 1-2 overall.

Box Score

After falling behind in the 11th minute on an Ohio score, Tribe freshman Olivia Hajek (Charlottesville, Va.) provided the equalizer later in the 22nd minute.  The ball was passed in from the right side Hajek in front, and after making space, she ripped a low shot past the goalkeep.  It was the first goal of her collegiate career.  The score remained tied through half-time, and late into the second period, before Ohio scored in a scrum following a penalty corner in the 59th minute.  W&M had two more corner chances to equalize in the 10th minute, but was unable to crack the seal again.

Sophomores Cate Johnson (Charlottesville, Va.) and Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) each picked up a save while playing a half in goal.  W&M outshot the Bobcats, 8-7, and corners were even at 4-4.

William and Mary is back in action next weekend, making a road swing through ACC outposts in North Carolina.  On Friday, Sept. 13, the Tribe will play at Duke at 6 p.m., before continuing on to face Wake Forest Sunday at 12 p.m.
