The William and Mary volleyball team continued play at the Fullerton Invitational late on Friday night, falling in a 3-0 decision to host Cal State-Fullerton. The Tribe is now 1-4 on the season, while the Titans improved to 3-2 overall.
Box ScoreThe Tribe was led in the match by redshirt-freshman
Michelle Heath (Rustburg, Va.), who came off the bench to score nine kills while hitting .300 and helping out on a block. Also of note for W&M, redshirt-junior
Monika Stanciauskas (Wheaton, Ill.) had seven kills while hitting .500, and sophomore
Mallory Brickerd (Ashburn, Va.) produced eight kills on a .350 attack. Classmate
Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) led all players with four blocks, and redshirt-junior
Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Va.) had a match-high 11 digs. Freshman setter
Paige Lucas (Asheboro, N.C.) rounded out the notables with 24 assists and six digs.
The story of the first two sets were early runs by the Titans, who raced out ahead 12-6 in both stanzas and forced the Tribe to expend lots of energy just to try and catch back up. After CSF won 25-16 and 25-15, W&M came out in the third set and was able to dictate pace to earn a 9-8 lead. From there, however, the home teams size advantage began to tell, and the Titans were able to slowly pull away again to a 25-16 win.
William and Mary is back in action on Saturday with two more matches. At noon Pacific, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, the Tribe takes on Wake Forest, before facing Kent State at 4:30 p.m. Pacific, 7:30 p.m. Eastern.
