The William and Mary field hockey team was edged by ninth-ranked Duke in an extremely close match Friday night, falling by a score of 2-1. The Tribe is now 2-3 on the year, while the Blue Devils improved to 4-1 overall.

Brittany Hopkins (Springfield, Va.) fed a pass in to senior
Taylor Hodge (Louisville, Ky.), who drove in and scored her team-leading third goal of the year. The score remained tied until eight minutes to go, when Duke moved ahead in a scrum in front of the cage. It marked the sixth-straight match against a ranked opponent that the Tribe has kept within one goal or won.
In goal,
Cate Johnson (Charlottesville, Va.) made a career-high seven saves against the Blue Devils. Her outstanding effort helped keep the Tribe in the game despite facing a 15-6 deficit in shots. Corners were even between the two long-time foes, 4-4, with W&M holding a slight 3-2 edge in the second half.
William and Mary is back in action on Sunday, taking on No. 18 Wake Forest at 12:00 p.m in Winston-Salem.
