CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.
(March 13, 2013) - Playing its fourth consecutive road game, the William
and Mary lacrosse team fell at No. 9 Virginia, 18-5, on Wednesday evening.
Junior Taelor Salmon led the Tribe (2-5, 0-2 CAA) with three
goals, while classmate Jenna Dougherty provided two points on a goal and an
assist. Senior Kyrstin Mackrides also added a goal.
W&M took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Dougherty about
a minute into the contest. Although Virginia (3-4, 0-2 ACC) bounced back with a
pair of goals, Salmon scored off an assist from Dougherty to tie the count at
2-2 with 19:39 showing.
Virginia began to pull away during the remainder of the
opening half, however, as it outscored the Tribe, 8-1, to build a 10-3 lead at
the intermission. W&M's lone goal during the stretch came by Mackrides at
the 3:56 mark.
The Cavaliers opened the second stanza with four unanswered
goals to extend the margin to 14-3 with 22:54 remaining.
While Salmon found the back of the cage with 19:11 showing to
halt the run, W&M would score just once more as UVA earned the victory.
Virginia held a 17-8 advantage in draws and owned a narrow
14-12 edge in ground balls.
Casey Bocklet led UVA with six points (5g, 1a), while
Courtney Swan added four goals and five draw controls.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts top-ranked
Maryland next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
