DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 17, 2013) - The
William and Mary lacrosse team fell at No. 7 Duke, 15-8, on Sunday afternoon in
Durham, N.C.
The Tribe
(1-1) trailed by just three goals midway through the second half, but the Blue
Devils (4-0) recorded the contest's final four scores to earn their fourth
consecutive victory.
Junior Taelor
Salmon led W&M with four points on three goals and one assist, while senior
Kyrstin Mackrides totaled three goals and sophomore Kaleigh Noon provided three
assists and three draw controls.
Defensively,
junior goalie Colleen Nofi recorded a career-high 19 saves, while senior Brett
Hayes posted three caused turnovers.
Things looked
good for the Tribe early in the contest, as it jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the
opening 6:03. After Makenzie Hommel put Duke ahead 1-0 with a goal on the
game's opening possession, W&M responded with consecutive scores by senior
Katie Stillwell, Noon and Salmon.
However, the
Blue Devils countered the Tribe's run with nine unanswered goals to build a
10-3 advantage with 8:24 remaining in the opening half.
The Green and
Gold held DU scoreless during the remainder of the first stanza and got a pair
of goals from Mackrides, as it headed to the locker room trailing 10-5.
As was the
case in the opening half, Duke got on the scoreboard first in the second frame,
but the Tribe responded with three unanswered goals. Salmon provided the first
two scores during the run, while Mackrides' third goal of the afternoon
narrowed the margin to 11-8 with 15:57 remaining.
However, Duke
halted the run with a timeout and outscored W&M 4-0 during the remainder of
the contest.
Hommel led
Duke with four points on three goals and an assist, while Taylor Virden
provided a game-high five draw controls and four ground balls.
The Tribe will
return to action when it hosts No. 13 Ohio State at Martin Family Stadium at
Albert-Daly Field on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
