No. 21 Men's Soccer Battles Back; Earns, 2-2, Road Draw at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The William and Mary men's soccer team scored a late goal and earned a 2-2 Colonial Athletic Association draw on Saturday night at UNCW.

William and Mary now is 8-4-2, 3-2-1 in CAA play, while the Seahawks sit at 8-5-2, 3-2-1 in conference play.

The Seahawks made the most of their first shot of the night.  Colin Bonner sent a pass to David Sizemore. Sizemore, then, uncorked a shot from 24 yards out that slipped in just under the crossbar. The sixth minute goal, gave the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead.

William and Mary also made the most of its first shot of the game. In the 12th minute, junior Marcus Luster sent a pass from the center of the field that found classmate Josh West. West fired a shot that deflected off of the UNCW goalkeeper into the goal. The goal was the team-leading sixth of the season for West and tied the score 1-1.

At the break, the match remained tied at 1-1. UNCW did hold a slight 5-3 advantage in shots, including a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Seahawks regained the lead with a goal in the 65th minute. Sizemore lined up a free kick from 25 yards out and was able to place the ball in the right side of the net. Sizemore, who tallied his second goal of the night, gave UNCW a 2-1 lead.

Once again, William and Mary fought and found the equalizer. In the 87th minute, sophomore Zachary Montebell sent a cross to classmate Jackson Eskay. Eskay then sent a volley into the back of the net from ten yards out. The goal, which was the fifth of the season for Eskay, knotted the match at 2-2.

Neither team found the winner in the final moments of regulation. At the end of regulation the Seahawks had a 12-8 advantage in shots, including 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The Tribe opened the first overtime with a quick chance. Just 43 seconds into the first extra frame, Luster put a shot on frame, but it was stopped by UNCW goalkeeper Sean Melvin. Again in the 95th minute, West put a shot on frame, but Melvin turned the shot away.  UNCW did put one shot on goal, when Mateo Cardona fired, but redshirt freshman goalkeeper Mac Phillips made the save.

William and Mary had a quick shot to start the second overtime, when freshman Reilly Maw had his shot blocked. The Tribe's final chance came off of a corner kick, when junior Ryan Flesch was able put a shot on target that was saved.

UNCW had two chances late in the second overtime. The first came on a shot by Jacob VanCompernolle, but it sailed high. The last chance came in the 109th minute when Jose Garcia put a shot on frame that was saved by Phillips.

Phillips recorded six saves for the Tribe on the evening. On the offensive side, Eskay fired a match-high four shots.

The College returns home for its regular season finale when they welcome James Madison to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The match, which can be seen nationally on NSCAATV.com, kicks off at 7 p.m.
