WILLIAMSBURG, Va.
- The William and Mary women's basketball team fell to Winthrop, 81-70, on
Wednesday evening at Kaplan Arena.
Playing in front of the Green and Gold faithful for the first time since
Nov. 14, senior Janine Aldridge led the way with 19 points, five rebounds and
four assists. The College cut a
double-digit second half deficit down to two but was unable to complete the
come from behind victory. The setback
drops W&M to 2-9 on the season, while Winthrop improves to 7-6 with the win.
Sophomore Jazmen Boone poured in a career-high 17 points to
go along with a team-high seven assists and six rebounds. Classmate Kyla Kerstetter netted 11 points on
five made field-goals, while senior Emily Correal ripped down a team leading 13
rebounds to go along with seven points.
Senior Jaclyn McKenna finished the night with nine points and eight
rebounds.
For the second consecutive game, the Green and Gold got
great production from its bench. Tonight's
reserves tallied 42 points compared to Winthrop's 19. Furthermore, the Tribe held the upper hand in
points off of turnovers (13-6), second chance points (23-21), and rebounds
(57-52). The College finished the night
shooting 28.4 percent (25-of-88) from the floor, while it netted 11 3-pointers
on 38 attempts (28.9 percent). The 88
attempts from the field and 38 from 3-point range are new school records.
In a defensive minded opening sequence, the Eagles trudged
their way to an early lead, 10-7, at the 13:43 mark of the first-half. Schaquilla Nunn's conventional 3-point play
with 10:56 left in the frame extended the Winthrop advantage to 20-9.
Over the course of the next 4:38 the Tribe responded with a
13-2 run, as it tied the affair, 22-22, with 6:18 remaining in the half. Boone ignited the spark with a layup at the
10:36 juncture, while also connecting on a 3-pointer during the burst. Correal capped the charge with a free-throw,
which tied the contest at 22.
The Eagles netted the night's next seven points as it
extended the advantage to 29-22 at the 3:41 mark. In the waning seconds of the half, Aldridge
drilled a 3-pointer from 23 feet away as the Tribe cut the deficit to three,
34-31, at intermission.
In second-half action, Winthrop pushed its margin to 44-35
just three minutes into the frame. Once
again, a gritty Tribe squad answered the bell, and countered with an 11-6
spurt. Boone mounted the rally with a
layup off of an assist from McKenna at the 16:24 juncture. Kerstetter's trifecta brought the Tribe to
within 50-44 at the 12:59 mark.
Additionally, the Brentwood, Tenn., native closed the output with a fast
break lay in off the glass, which made the score 50-46 still in favor of
Winthrop with 12:29 left in regulation.
Samiya Wright's free-throw at the 10:02 mark gave the Eagles
a 10-point cushion, 59-49. As it had
done all game, the Green and Gold clawed its way back into the contest, this
time a 13-5 run propelled W&M to within 64-62 with 6:30 remaining in the
game. During the stretch, Aldridge
netted six points on two 3-pointers, while McKenna scored the additional seven.
However, Winthrop utilized a 10-2 run over the 4:08 as it distanced itself en
route to the win.
Dequesha McClanahan led the Eagles with 14 points, 15
rebounds and 12 assists. Diana
Choibekova added 19 points, while Aliyah Kilpatrick chipped in with 15. For the night, Winthrop shot 32-of-72 (44.4
percent) from the field and 10-of-29 (58.3 percent) from 3-point territory.
The Tribe returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 2, as it travels
to Hofstra for its Colonial Athletic Association opener. Tip-off from Hempstead, N.Y., is slated for 2
