Men's Soccer Plays Northeastern to Draw

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men's soccer team opened its Colonial Athletic Association slate playing Northeastern to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon from Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.  Sophomore Michael Teiman put the Tribe ahead, 1-0, in first-half action, but the Huskies answered back, tying the contest in the waning moments of regulation.  Overall, the Tribe's record goes to 2-4-2 and 0-0-1 in CAA play, while the Huskies go to 4-1-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in league action.

In a defensive-minded first-half, the Green and Gold broke through in the 21st minute.  Sophomore Michael Teiman headed in a corner kick from senior Ben Anderson, giving the Tribe the one-goal advantage.  The set-piece score was Teiman's first of the year, while the assist was Anderson's team-high fourth. For the half, W&M outshot Northeastern, 7-5, with three coming on goal. The Tribe also held the edge in corner kicks, 3-2.  Sophomore keeper Bennett Jones registered two saves in the opening 45-minutes.

For the majority of the second-half, the College owned the momentum, as Northeastern's first shot attempt of the period didn't culminate until the 77th minute.  In the 84th minute, the Green and Gold threatened when sophomore Chris Albiston raced inside the 18 and received a cross from classmate Andrew Kestler, but Northeastern's back-line denied W&M's attempt on frame.  With eight seconds remaining in the affair, the Huskies' Simon Cox headed in the equalizer off an assist from senior goalie Oliver Blum, who sent a free kick from mid-field inside the box for the tying score.

In the two 10-minute overtime periods, neither team budged defensively, as the season's league opener ended in a 1-1 draw.  The Tribe produced a quality look in the 96th minute when Kestler fired a shot that screamed just wide right of goal.  For the match, W&M registered 12 shots with three coming on frame, while the Huskies tallied 15 attempts with seven on goal.

For the ninth consecutive match, W&M and Northeastern played extra minutes on Saturday afternoon.  Not a single match in the series history between the two schools has ended in regulation.

The College returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 22, as it travels to High Point for a 7 p.m. affair.   Fans can follow the High Point action online at TribeAthletics.com with live stats.  All-time, the Green and Gold is 2-0 against the Panthers.
