The winning ways continued for the William and Mary field hockey team Friday night, with the Tribe taking out Longwood by a 4-2 count. The win is the third-straight to open the year and third on the road for the Tribe, while the Lancers fall to 0-3.
Box Score
Every one of the College's four goals was scored by a different set of players, beginning with
Jesse Ebner's (Sinking Spring, Pa.) in the seventh minute. Out of a penalty corner, Ebner inserted the ball and
Christine Johnson (Williamsburg, Va.) sent a shot ripping towards the near post. It looked like it might be sliding wide, but Ebner was there to neatly deflect the shot into the back of the boards for her first goal of the season. Longwood tied it up just 45 seconds later, on their only shot of the half, but sophomore
Kayleigh Ross (McLean, Va.) scored in the 22nd minute to stake W&M to a lead it would not relinquish. Senior
Ashley Kyle (San Diego, Calif.) delivered a pass to the near post that Ross was able to scoop into the net for her first career game-winner.
Right before the horn, W&M scored its third goal of the contest off of another of its eight penalty corners in the half. Freshman
Pip Saunders (Mittagong, NSW) started the sequence with a pass to
Chaney Manganello (Richmond, Va.), and the junior set up the shot beautifully for Johnson who hammered home her fifth goal of the season. Starting the second half, neither team was able to make much headway for the first 25 minutes, with just three shots by Longwood and one by the Tribe. That would change at the start of the 62nd minute, however, with the College's fourth goal of the contest.
Taylor Gladey (Mountaintop, Pa.) was working around the edge of the scoring circle, then found
Emma Clifton (Loomberah, NSW) near the penalty spot in the middle of circle. The sophomore all-conference honoree ripped a hard, low shot into the boards for her second goal of the year. Longwood would get one back in the 68th minute, but the Tribe was able to hang on and clinch the victory.
W&M outshot the Lancers 17-7 on the night, and had a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners. Senior
Elizabeth Frey (Virginia Beach, Va.) started the contest and was credited with the win, before giving way to redshirt-freshman
Catherine Johnson (Charlottesville, Va.) for the second half. Johnson picked up four saves in her 35 minutes between the pipes.
William and Mary returns to action on Sunday at 2 p.m., taking on Liberty in Lynchburg.
