WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 8, 2012) - The
William and Mary lacrosse team held Delaware scoreless for the final 18 minutes
and scored a pair of goals in the closing 54 seconds but was edged by the Blue
Hens, 12-11, on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Although
W&M (2-11, 0-3) jumped out to a 6-1 advantage less than 10 minutes into the
contest, Delaware (4-9, 2-1) closed the opening half with an 8-0 run. UD
extended its margin to as many as four, 12-8, midway through the second half,
but W&M held the Blue Hens scoreless for the final 18:05 en route to
mounting its comeback bid. After a free-position goal by senior Jenny Michael
at the 8:52 mark, sophomore Taelor Salmon scored twice in the final minute -
the second of which came on an 8-meter opportunity with just 12 seconds
remaining. UD won the ensuing draw, however, and was able to run out the clock.

totaled four points on three goals and an assist. Michael added three points
(2g, 1a) and two draw controls, while sophomore Katie Stillwell provided a
team-high three draw controls, two ground balls and a goal. Junior Caitlin Murphy also found the back of the cage, while junior Kyrstin Mackrides dished
out two assists.
Freshman
goalie Lucy Ferguson totaled eight saves in the first half, while sophomore
goalie Colleen Nofi allowed just three goals and recorded seven saves in the
second half.
Although

goal by Chelsea Fay, the College responded with six unanswered goals in the
next nine minutes. Anderson provided four of the scores, which came on just
four shot attempts. Murphy and Stillwell also added goals during the
impressive run.
However,
Delaware held W&M scoreless during the remainder of the half and registered
eight unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead at halftime.
The Tribe
opened the second stanza with goals by Salmon and Michael to close within just
one, 9-8, with 27:53 showing. Delaware then countered with three unanswered
goals to lead, 12-8, with 18:06 remaining before W&M's dramatic comeback
effort came up just short.
Delaware held
a narrow 17-15 edge in ground balls but owned a 17-8 advantage in draw
controls.
Bridget Burns
led Delaware with four points (3g, 1a), while Chelsea Fay, Caitlin McCartney
and Abbie Hartman all added two goals apiece.
