HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (April 22, 2012) - Playing
in its second-consecutive overtime game, the William and Mary lacrosse team
closed out its season with an 8-7 victory at Hofstra on Sunday afternoon.
Juniors
Kyrstin Mackrides and Caitlin Murphy both scored during the opening minute of
the initial three-minute overtime session, and the Tribe (4-13, 2-5) held
Hofstra (5-11, 4-3) to just one goal during the remainder of overtime to secure
the win.
Freshman
goalie Lucy Ferguson came up big in the extra session, as she recorded two of
her single-game school-record 23 saves in overtime. With the impressive effort, Ferguson
finishes the season with 172 saves, which ties for the fourth-best
single-season total in school history.
Murphy led the
Tribe with three points (2g, 1a), three ground balls and a draw control, while
senior Jenny Michael and Mackrides each posted two points on a goal and assist.
Senior Maggie Anderson, senior Stephanie Steinweg, junior Brett Hayes and
sophomore Taelor Salmon also found the back of the cage.
Defensively,
senior Lauren Binzer totaled a career-best five ground balls with a caused
turnover, while senior Sarah Mulvey posted a pair of caused turnovers and
senior Denise Lenihan registered three ground balls.
W&M got on
the scoreboard first when Murphy scored off an assist from Michael just 1:03
into the contest.
Although
Hofstra knotted the count at 1-1 with a goal by Claire Brady a little more than
two minutes later, the Tribe reclaimed the lead with a score by Salmon at the
25:22 mark.
The teams
combined to total just one more goal during the remainder of the half, as
Steinweg's score with 9:36 showing gave the College a 3-1 lead at the intermission.
Although
Hofstra outshot W&M, 18-6, in the opening 30 minutes, Ferguson totaled 13
saves in the initial stanza to help limit the Pride to just one goal.
The Tribe
struck first in the second half, as Hayes scored on a free position opportunity
just 1:23 into the frame.
Although HU
quickly answered with a goal by Emily von Hollen, W&M extended the margin
to 6-2 midway through the half with scores by Anderson and Michael. Anderson
found the back of the cage off an assist from freshman Ellen Shaffrey at the 21:58
mark, while Michael's goal was assisted by Mackrides with 15:38 remaining.
Hofstra closed
regulation with a 4-0 run, as Maryann Miller tied the game at 6-6 with 1:24
remaining when she tallied her third and final goal of the stretch. HU's Alex
Mezzanotte put a shot on goal in the waning seconds, but Ferguson made the stop
to force overtime.
