PHILADELPHIA, Va. (April 20, 2012) - The
William and Mary lacrosse team fell at Drexel, 11-10, in overtime on Friday
evening.
W&M (3-13,
1-5) owned a 10-6 lead with less than five minutes remaining, but Drexel (10-5,
3-3) rattled off four unanswered goals down the stretch to send the contest
into overtime. After posting the equalizer with just 0:27 remaining in
regulation, Kelli Joran scored the eventual game-winner with 0:11 left in the
initial three-minute overtime segment. The Tribe had a pair of possessions in
the second three-minute segment but was unable to tie the score.
Freshman
Kaleigh Noon, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week,
led the College with four points (3g, 1a) and four draw controls. Senior Maggie Anderson also recorded four points (2g, 2a), as she moved into sole possession
of third place on W&M's all-time goals scored list (133). Sophomore Taelor Salmon also came up big offensively with three points (1g, 2a), while junior
Kyrstin Mackrides recorded two goals.
Freshman
goalie Lucy Ferguson equaled a career high with 14 saves, while sophomore
Hannah Clarke posted a team-high four ground balls with two caused turnovers.
Although the
Dragons outshot W&M, 36-11, the Tribe posted a .909 shooting percentage
(10-of-11).
The Tribe
jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Mackrides and junior Caitlin Murphy.
Mackrides registered the first goal on a free position opportunity, while
Murphy found the back of the cage off an assist from Anderson.
Although DU
responded with three unanswered goals to take its first lead of the game midway
through the half, W&M countered with scores by Anderson and senior Jenny Michael
to take a 4-3 advantage. Anderson scored off an assist from Noon at the 14:25
mark, while Michael's goal came off an assist from Anderson less than a minute
later.
Drexel briefly
reclaimed the lead, 5-4, following back-to-back goals by Joran and Charlotte
Wood, but a score by Salmon knotted the count at 5-5 with 4:38 remaining in the
opening stanza.
W&M
controlled much of the second half, as it recorded five of the first six goals
and led, 10-6, following a score by Noon off an assist from sophomore Katie Stillwell
with 5:03 remaining. It was Noon's third goal of the half, while Mackrides and
Anderson also found the back of the cage during the 5-1 run.
Drexel then
closed the game with four unanswered goals before Joran scored the game-winner
in overtime.
W&M owned
a 13-11 edge in draw controls, but Drexel held a 17-8 margin in ground balls.
Wood led
Drexel with four points (3g, 1a), while Joran totaled three goals.
The Tribe will
close out its season when it plays at Hofstra on Sunday at 1 p.m.
