Tribe Lacrosse Cruises Past George Mason, 18-8, on Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 15, 2012) - The William and Mary lacrosse team cruised past George Mason, 18-8, on Senior Day at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday afternoon.

After leading 9-5 at halftime, the Tribe (3-12, 1-4) scored seven of the first eight goals in the second half to pull away for the victory.

The Tribe utilized a balanced attack offensively, as nine different players found the back of the cage. Freshman Kaleigh Noon led the team with a career-high six points on four goals - coming on just five shots - and two assists. The Baltimore, Md., native also posted a career-best six draw controls. Junior Kyrstin Mackrides recorded four goals as well, while senior Maggie Anderson totaled five points on two goals and a game-high three assists. Sophomore Taelor Salmon also came up big with three points (2g, 1a), while junior Caitlin Murphy scored twice.

Defensively, senior Sarah Mulvey and redshirt freshman Maggie Bermingham both recorded three ground balls apiece, while goalie Lucy Ferguson posted eight saves and five ground balls. Additionally, senior Lauren Binzer, sophomore Hannah Clarke, sophomore Katie Stillwell and Anderson all caused a pair of turnovers.

W&M opened the game well and quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest. Stillwell provided the first goal off an assist from Anderson, while senior Stephanie Steinweg added the second goal on an 8-meter opportunity. Murphy tallied the third score off another assist from Anderson.

Although George Mason (3-11, 1-4) answered with a pair of scores, the Tribe rattled off another 3-0 run to build a 6-2 advantage. Dougherty and Mackrides posted the first two goals, while Murphy found the back of the cage off an assist from Noon at the 18:44 mark.

The Patriots responded with back-to-back goals again, but W&M outscored GMU, 3-1, during the remainder of the half to lead, 9-5, at halftime.

The Tribe pulled away in the second half, as it outscored Mason, 7-1, during the first 23 minutes of the stanza to build a commanding 16-6 lead. Noon recorded three goals during the stretch, while Salmon scored twice.

Mason was unable to cut the margin to less than nine the rest of the way, as W&M earned the lopsided victory.

As a team, W&M held a 14-13 edge in draw controls and owned a 23-19 advantage in ground balls. Additionally, the College scored on 18 of its 30 shots for a .600 shooting percentage.

Emily Ellisen led George Mason with five points (4g, 1a) and posted a team-high four draw controls.

The Tribe will close out the regular season when it plays at Drexel and Hofstra next weekend.
