HARRISONBURG, Va. (April 13, 2012) - The
William and Mary lacrosse team fell to James Madison, 15-11, on Friday evening
in Harrisonburg, Va.
W&M (2-12,
0-4) led by as many as three goals in the first half, but James Madison (8-5,
4-0) utilized a 7-1 run to start the second stanza to earn the victory.
Junior Kyrstin Mackrides led the Tribe with three goals, while sophomore Taelor Salmon totaled
a team-high four points on two goals and two assists. Sophomores Jenna Dougherty and Katie Stillwell also recorded two goals apiece, while freshman
Kaleigh Noon earned a career-high six draw controls.
Although JMU
got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Ashley Kimener just a little more
than a minute into the contest, W&M answered with goals by senior Maggie Anderson and Dougherty to take a 2-1 lead with 22:48 showing.
After JMU
reclaimed the lead with back-to-back scores, the College rattled off a 4-0 run
midway through the half to build a 6-3 advantage. Stillwell scored twice during
the stretch, while junior Caitlin Murphy and Dougherty also found the back of
the cage.
The Dukes
rallied back with a 3-0 run of their own to tie the count at 6-6 with 6:43
remaining, but Salmon and Mackrides both scored in the stanza's waning minutes
to give the Tribe an 8-6 cushion at halftime.
James Madison
opened the second half with three unanswered goals and regained the lead, 9-8,
following a score by Cally Chakrian with 22:20 showing.
While a
free-position goal by Salmon less than two minutes later evened the score, JMU
responded with a 4-0 run during a 13-minute span to take a 13-9 advantage with
5:16 on the clock.
Shortly thereafter, W&M
narrowed the margin to just two with a pair of goals by Mackrides. The first
score came off an assist from Salmon at the 3:49 mark, while the second was on
an 8-meter opportunity just 1:03 later.
The Tribe was
unable to get any closer, however, as JMU added two more goals in the closing
minutes for the final margin.
James Madison
held a 16-12 advantage in draw controls and a 15-11 edge in ground balls.
JMU was led by
six players who recorded multi-goal efforts, while Monica Zabel totaled a
team-high four points on two goals and two assists.
The Tribe will
close out its regular-season home slate when it hosts George Mason for Senior
Day on Sunday at 1 p.m.
