RICHMOND, Va. (March 21, 2012) - The
William and Mary lacrosse team fell at in-state rival Richmond, 18-8, on
Wednesday evening.
W&M (2-7)
got balanced production offensively, as seven players scored goals. Sophomore Hannah Clarke and junior
Caitlin Murphy recorded career highs in draw controls with six and five, respectively, while senior Jenny Michael totaled three. W&M owned a 19-10 advantage in the category.
Defensively,
seniors Sarah Mulvey and Lauren Binzer both registered four ground balls, while
freshman goalie Lucy Ferguson totaled 13 saves - nearly matching her season high
of 14 that she established against Duke.
After an hour
and a half weather delay, UR (4-5) began the contest with four unanswered
goals in the opening 6:33. However, W&M quickly responded with scores by senior
Maggie Anderson and sophomore Jenna Dougherty to cut the margin in half, 4-2,
with 21:23 showing.
The Spiders
countered with a 4-1 run to extend their advantage to 8-3 with 7:02 remaining
in the opening half. Junior Kyrstin Mackrides tallied the Tribe's lone goal
during the stretch.
The Tribe
defense held UR scoreless during the remainder of the stanza, as Ferguson
earned three of her eight first-half saves during the closing minutes. Sophomore
Taelor Salmon also found the back of the cage during the waning minutes to cut
the margin to 8-4 at the intermission.
Richmond
opened the second half with a 7-0 run to push its lead to 15-4 with 22:07
showing.
W&M cut
the margin to nine, 15-6, with goals by Anderson and freshman
Amanda Johnson midway through the half, but the Tribe was unable to get any
closer the rest of the way.
Kara Moschetti
led UR with four goals, while Caitlin Fifield and Sam Stevenson both totaled
seven points apiece.
The Tribe will
wrap up the non-conference portion of its slate when it plays at ninth-ranked
Penn State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
