WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 14, 2012) - The
William and Mary lacrosse team fell to 10th-ranked Virginia, 10-3, on Wednesday
evening at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Virginia (4-3,
0-2) owned just a two-goal advantage at halftime but outscored the Tribe (2-5,
0-0), 6-1, in the final 30 minutes to earn the victory.
Senior Maggie Anderson and sophomores Katie Stillwell and Jenna Dougherty all registered
goals for W&M, while junior Caitlin Murphy dished out an assist. With her
score, Anderson increased her career goals total to 119 and is now tied for
fifth on the College's all-time list.
Defensively,
senior Sarah Mulvey totaled a team-high three ground balls, while freshman
goalie Lucy Ferguson recorded a game-high nine saves.
It was a
defensive battle early as it took more than nine minutes before either team got
on the scoreboard. UVA struck first when Liza Blue found the back of the cage with
20:45 showing and helped ignite a 3-0.
W&M
responded by scoring two of the opening stanza's final three goals, however, as
Stillwell and Dougherty both tallied scores.
Although it
led by just two at halftime, 4-2, Virginia broke the game open with six unanswered
goals following the intermission. W&M's lone score of the second half came
when Anderson scored off an assist from Murphy with 1:07 remaining.
While the
Tribe held a 12-10 advantage in ground balls, UVA won 12 of the 15 draw
controls and outshot W&M, 26-14.
Sloan Warren
led the Cavaliers with three goals and five draw controls, while Josie Owen
dished out five assists.
The Tribe will
return to action when it hosts sixth-ranked Florida on Saturday at 1 p.m.
