WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Feb. 29, 2012) - The
William and Mary lacrosse team earned its second-consecutive victory with a 22-9
win against Longwood on Wednesday evening at Busch Turf Field.
The Tribe
(2-3) utilized a balanced attack en route to earning the lopsided triumph, as
nine different players scored at least one goal, while 12 registered at least
one point.
Sophomore
Taelor Salmon led W&M with a career-high seven points (5g, 2a), while
junior Kyrstin Mackrides equaled a career high with four goals. Freshmen
Kaleigh Noon and Ellen Shaffrey also came up big with five points apiece, with
each totaling three goals and two assists, while senior Maggie Anderson
provided six points (2g, 4a). With the performance, Anderson increased her career goals
total to 117 and is now tied for ninth on the program's all-time list.
Senior Jenny Michael and sophomore Katie Stillwell both tallied four draw controls apiece,
while junior Brett Hayes added three draws. Defensively, Sarah Mulvey increased
her career caused turnovers total to 42 and is now tied for 10th on the
program's all-time list. The Milton, Mass., native was one of 10 Tribe players
who caused at least one turnover.
Although
Longwood (0-3) jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the opening minutes, W&M
responded with a 6-0 run to build a 7-2 advantage midway through the half.
Junior Caitlin Murphy and Salmon both came up big during the stretch with two
goals apiece, while Michael dished out a pair of assists during the run.
The teams
traded goals three times during the remainder of the half, as W&M held a
10-5 lead at the break.
While the
Lancers tallied the initial goal of the second stanza to narrow the margin to
four, the College answered with a 4-0 run to push the lead to 14-6 with 23:15
remaining. Salmon and Mackrides both scored twice during the stretch.
Although
Longwood scored two of the next three goals to cut the gap to seven, 15-8, with
18:43 on the clock, W&M closed out the game with a 7-1 run to preserve the
victory. The final 12:54 was played with a running clock.
The Tribe
finished the contest with a 19-14 advantage in draw controls and an 18-17 edge
in ground balls.
With the
victory, W&M has now won each of its last five meetings with Longwood and
improves its all-time record in the series to 5-1.
The Tribe will
return to action when it plays at top-ranked Northwestern on March 10.
