ATLANTA, Ga. - The William and Mary Tribe women's basketball team fell
Sunday afternoon at Georgia State, 74-62.
The setback drops the Tribe to 10-18 overall and 3-14 in CAA action,
while GSU improves to 8-20 on the year and 2-15 in league play.
Senior guard Taysha Pye scored a team-high 22 points to lead
the Green and Gold effort. Junior
forward Emily Correal notched her 11th double-double of the season, consisting
of 18 points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Katherine DeHenzel tallied five
points and dished out a game-high nine assists to go with four steals, while freshmen
Jazmen Boone and Kyla Kerstetter each had four points.
In the opening 10 minutes of action both teams raced up and
down the floor at a hectic pace, vying for the first-half momentum. The College was on the verge of seizing the
first half momentum after Pye connected on a jumper cut the Panther lead to
19-18 with 10:33 left in the first.
However, with 9:07 left to go and the Tribe down 21-20, GSU reeled off a
14-4 run over the course of seven minutes and extended its lead to 35-24 with
only 2:46 remaining in the opening stanza.
With time winding down in the half Boone's lay-up off a feed from
DeHenzel cut the W&M deficit to 39-29 at intermission.
The College was led by a balanced scoring attack in the
first half. Correal led the way with
eight points and six rebounds, while Pye poured in five. DeHenzel also netted five points while
dishing out four assists. Defensively,
junior Janine Aldridge recorded three steals in the opening 20 minutes of
action.
Down 49-33, with 14:45 left to go in the contest, the Tribe
answered with a 10-2 run that cut the Panther lead to 51-43 with just 9:43
remaining. The run originated after a
Pye lay-up and culminated in a Correal lay-up off the glass. Georgia State responded by scoring 13 of the game's
next 17 points. With 5:48 left to play in the game, the Panthers owned a
64-47advantage and eventually secured the 74-62 victory.
For the game, W&M shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the
floor. From the line the, College was an
impressive 20-of-26 (76.9 percent). The
Green and Gold finished the contest with 11 steals and the advantage in bench
points over GSU, 32-14. GSU finished the
contest shooting 46.0 percent (29-of-63) from the field. Chandra Harris led Panthers with a game-high
23 points, while Jerlisa Taylor chipped in with 17.
The Tribe concludes its regular season Wednesday, Feb. 29,
as it plays hosts Delaware. Tip-off from
Kaplan Arena is slated for 7 p.m.
