Tribe Falls at No. 2 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Feb. 12, 2012) - The William and Mary lacrosse team outscored second-ranked Maryland in the second half but fell to the Terps, 19-8, on Sunday afternoon in College Park, Md.

The Tribe (0-2) was led by junior Kyrstin Mackrides, sophomore Taelor Salmon and sophomore Jenna Dougherty who all scored two goals apiece. Senior Jenny Michael also added a goal and earned a career-high six draw controls.

Maryland (1-0) opened the game with nine unanswered goals before W&M got on the scoreboard when Dougherty found the back of the cage with 15:03 showing.

Senior Maggie Anderson scored the College's only other goal of the opening half with 2:07 remaining, and UM closed the stanza on a 5-1 run to lead 14-2 at the intermission.

Despite the scoring margin, W&M was effective winning the draw in the opening half and won eight of 17 opportunities.

Although Maryland tallied the first two goals of the second half, the Tribe closed the game on a 6-3 run in the final 22 minutes of play. Salmon and Mackrides both tallied a pair of goals during the stretch, while Michael and Dougherty also found the back of the cage.

Maryland was led by Katie Schwarzman and Brooke Griffin, who totaled five and four goals, respectively.

The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Navy on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
