Williamsburg, Va -- The William and Mary community recently mourned the passing
of former coach and administrator, Milton "Milt" L. Drewer, Jr.
Milt, a native of Saxis, Va. (located on Virginia's Eastern
Shore), served as William and Mary's Head Football Coach and Athletics Director
from 1957 through 1963. In his seven years at the top of the program, the
College recorded a 21-46-2 overall record.
A two-sport standout athlete (track and football) at
Randolph-Macon College, Drewer got his start at W&M at the ripe age of just
34 years old, when he was named in the dual role of athletics director and
football coach. Prior to his arrival
on campus, he spent assistant coaching stints at area high school programs and
the University of Richmond.
In the book 100 Years
of Tribe Football Drewer noted a 1957, 7-6, win at then unbeaten North
Carolina State as one of his on field highlights. Additionally, he hired a young Lou Holtz, an
eventual collegiate coaching legend, as the team's only full-time assistant
coach for the 1962 season.
After completing his seven-year run at William and Mary,
Drewer drew on his experiences as the Tribe's football coach to launch a very
successful career in the banking industry.
Again, quoting 100
Years of Tribe Football, "Coaching prepared me to be a successful banker,"
stated Drewer. "First, I learned how to
get along with people. Second, Organization, in football it is a must, in
banking it is a major need. Third, you
develop leadership talents in football that you can use anywhere. Fourth, you
learn to put forth an image ... one with confidence."
In a banking career that spanned decades, Drewer eventually
retired as the CEO of the First American Bank of Virginia in 1990. He was also very active in a broad range of
civic positions, including serving as president of both Virginia State Chamber
of Commerce and as a chairman for the state chapter of the American Cancer
Society.
Along the way, he retained his ties to the College, as he
served on the school's Board of Visitors from 1976 through 1984. Additionally, his family remembered William
and Mary Football Program by asking that gifts in his memory be made to the
Tribe Club. Those can be processed
