SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The
William and Mary women's basketball team fell at the University of Texas at San
Antonio on Sunday afternoon, 76-50.
Trailing by only singe digits at halftime, the Tribe was outdistanced by
the Roadrunners in the second stanza.
Senior Taylor Hilton led the Tribe with 13 points, which included an
8-for-8 performance from the foul line. The
setback drops the College to 2-4 on the season, while UTSA improves to 5-1.
With 16:43 left in the first-half, senior Janine Aldridge
became only the 15th player in program history to score 1,000 career
points. The Massapequa, N.Y., native
banked in her 1,001 point from just inside the elbow. Aldridge finished the contest with seven
points and a team-high three steals.
Sophomore Jazmen Boone tallied 10 points, while senior Emily Correal chipped in with nine points to go along with a team leading seven
rebounds. Sophomore Anna Kestler dished
out a career-high six assists while contributing five points. For the second consecutive night, the College
capitalized on turnovers as it scored 19 points off of 20 UTSA giveaways.
In the early stages both teams went back-and-forth as Correal
tied the contest, 6-6, with a lay up at the 16:05 mark. With 11:17 left in the half, Mathieu's jumper
tied the affair for the fourth time of the stanza. However, the Roadrunners proceeded to score
10 of the next 12 points as it owned the advantage, 22-14, at the 7:31 juncture.
Not to be outdone, W&M responded with an 11-6 run which
was capped by a pair of Correal foul shots and with 4:26 left in the half the
Tribe was only down a possession, 28-25.
Feeling a shift in momentum imminent, UTSA responded and finished the
stanza on a 9-3 spurt to take a 37-28 halftime lead.
UTSA started the second half strong as it increased its
lead, 53-30, with 16:01 left in the contest.
The College cut the deficit to 16, 60-44, after Hilton netted a jumper
at the 9:05 mark as the College looked poised to make a run. However, that was as close as the Tribe got
to overtaking the UTSA lead, as the Roadrunner's kept its distance en route to
the win.
Sophomore Kamra King paced UTSA with 18 points and four
assists, while senior Whitney Wright chipped in with 11 points and seven
rebounds.
The Tribe returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 4, when it
travels to Navy. Tip-off from Annapolis,
Md., is slated for 7 p.m.
