HARRISONBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary men's soccer team fell at James Madison, 1-0, on Wednesday
evening from University Park. Even
though the College outshot the Dukes, 15-13, JMU managed to net the night's
lone goal in the 27th minute. With the setback, W&M falls to 3-10-3 overall
and 1-5-2 in CAA play, while James Madison improves to 7-5-3 on the season and
5-1-2 in league action.
In the early going, sophomore Zachary Montebell generated a
quality look in the 14th minute, but the Winfield, W.Va., native's attempt
sailed high of goal. The Dukes got on
the scoreboard in the 27th minute after junior Karel Manrau punched home a
rebound. Moments later, the Tribe was on
the verge of tying the match as junior Chris Perez sent a cross to Montebell,
who then put the equalizer on frame, but JMU's freshman keeper Kyle Morton was
there to make the diving save.
Looking for the tying goal, the Tribe started the second-half
on a mission. Just six minutes into the
second stanza, the College tallied five shots and a corner kick in its attempt
to tie the match. W&M's most
dangerous opportunity came when junior Will Smith blasted an attempt from
inside the six that resulted in a Morton kick save in the 51st minute. With
only minutes left in the contest and still trailing by a score, sophomore Chris Albiston's attempt in the 89th minute was blocked before threatening goal.
The College closes its regular-season home slate on Saturday, when it
hosts Delaware at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field in a match slated
to start at 7 p.m.
