W&M Field Hockey Completes Road Trip With 3-1 Win at Monmouth

The William and Mary field hockey team completed its season-opening road trip undefeated Sunday, downing Monmouth 3-1 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.  The Tribe is 2-0 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 1-3 with the loss.

W&M got on the board early in this one, impressively early, as freshman Emma Clifton (Loomberah, NSW, Australia) scored just 46 seconds into the contest.  The rookie received the ball on the right side and blasted a shot into the upper 90 past the Monmouth keeper to score her first collegiate points.  The Tribe defense made the 1-0 lead stand up through the rest of the half, killing eight corner opportunities, and senior Camilla Hill (Williamsburg, Va.) turned aside the only two shots to test her before halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Tribe continued to frustrate the Hawks, and drew several corner chances themselves.  Just after the turn of the 52nd minute, W&M was able to cash in on a corner and pull ahead 2-0.  Jesse Ebner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) continued her outstanding weekend by starting the play, sending the ball inbounds to Clifton who in turn set up junior Christine Johnson (Williamsburg, Va.).  Johnson powered the ball into the boards for her first career goal, ad the 2-0 lead.  15 minutes later, off of yet another corner, Ebner and Clifton provided the coup de grace, and put the Tribe ahead 3-0.  Clifton took the initial shot this time that was saved, but just like on her first goal Friday, Ebner was there to cleanup the rebound and pick up her team-leading third goal of the season.

Monmouth would salvage a goal in the waning minutes, out of a scrum in front of the Tribe goal, but to no avail as W&M was able to keep the game well in-hand and win.  The College outshot Monmouth in the second half, 7-6, and Hill picked up five saves to bring her career total to 164, just six away from 10th place on the Tribe's all-time list.

William and Mary returns home next weekend for a pair of matches against NorPac foes.  On Friday (Sept. 9), the Tribe will host Longwood at 4 p.m.  Saturday, Tribe alumna Ginny (Sutton) Turner '05 brings her Davidson Wildcats to Williamsburg for a 3 p.m. contest.  Both matches will be played at Busch Field.
