The William and Mary field hockey team fell on the road at Delaware Friday night, losing 3-1 after playing 10 v. 11 for much of the second half. The Tribe is now 6-3 on the year and 1-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while Delaware improves to 6-5, 1-0 in the league.
W&M dominated play in the first half, recovering from an early 1-0 deficit to tie the match 1-1 at the break and outshooting Delaware 7-3 in the process. The equalizing score came after a penalty corner, as the Tribe was passing the ball around the circle to try and find an open shot. Redshirt-freshman
Jesse Ebner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) saw the opening she needed, passing the ball through to junior
Ashley Kyle (San Diego, Calif.), who slotted the shot into the boards for her second goal of the season.
Coming out of the intermission, W&M looked to be in control again and knocking on the door of a go-ahead goal, when the first of two costly 10-minute yellow cards was issued in the 45th minute. During the ensuing power play, Delaware was able to draw a corner opportunity and score to go up 2-1. The Tribe only had four minutes of equal play before another card was issued towards the end of 59th minute, and led to another Delaware power-play goal in the 65th. Over the final five minutes, the Tribe was able to generate five more corner opportunities, but was unable to breakthrough to goal.
William and Mary returns home on Sunday afternoon, hosting Richmond at 1 p.m.
