The William and Mary field hockey team got its 2011 season underway Friday afternoon with a big road win at Rutgers, coming back from a goal-down at half to win 2-1. The Tribe moves to 1-0 on the year, while Rutgers falls to 1-2.
After an evenly played first half that saw Rutgers go ahead 1-0 in the 30th minute, W&M came out of halftime on fire and doubled-up the home team in shots and corners over the final 35 minutes. The barrage began early in the 45th minute, as the Tribe was able to draw the first of its seven penalty corners in the half. After junior Christine Johnson's (Williamsburg, Va.) shot was turned away by the keeper, redshirt-freshman Jesse Ebner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) was there to corral the rebound and put the ball into the net and tie the match. Not only was it Ebner's first collegiate goal, but she was making her first collegiate appearance as well.
Barely 90 seconds later, another corner led to the second Tribe goal as well, and involved by Ebner and Johnson again. In this instance, Johnson's shot found Ebner's stick and the freshman tipped the ball up and into the left side for the eventual match-winner. Rutgers would begin finding its range after that, forcing three corners in the final eight minutes, but senior goalkeeper Camilla Hill (Williamsburg, Va.) stood tall in the cage and stopped seven shots, four in the second half to earn the win.
For the game, the Tribe outshot the Scarlet Knights 11-8, including a 7-4 advantage in the second half. Corners were 9-7 in favor of the College, 6-3 after the break.
William and Mary is back in action Sunday at noon, playing at Monmouth in West Long Branch, New Jersey.
