W&M Falls in Double-Overtime Thriller to Davidson, 2-1

The William and Mary field hockey team fell 2-1 in double-overtime to Davidson Saturday, after a thrilling back-and-forth 90 minutes at Busch Field.  The Tribe moves to 3-1 on the year, while the Wildcats improve to 2-1.

After Davidson scored late in the first on a rebounded save, redshirt-junior Leah Zamesnik (Norfolk, Va.) scored her second goal of the season to tie things up in the 42nd minute.  Off a corner, junior Christine Johnson (Williamsburg, Va.) punched in a shot from the top of the circle that appeared to be sliding just wide of the goal.  Zamesnik caught the ball on her stick before it could leave the field, however, tipping it into the upper 90 on the near post to knot the score at 1-1.  Senior goalkeeper Camilla Hill (Williamsburg, Va.) kept the score even from there, making eight saves and challenging several breakaways in overtime to give her teammates the chance for the win.  Eventually, however, the Wildcats were able to score an improbable, low-angle shot from deep on the baseline that ended the match in the 92nd minute.

Although the Tribe held the box score advantage, with 20 shots and 10 corners to Davidson's 16 and 7, luck was not on the side of the College as several shots were turned just wide of the goal.  Included in that total was a breakaway chance in double-overtime, when Johnson again got things started with a shot on the right side.  Junior Ashley Kyle (San Diego, Calif.) was wide open on the left and got her stick on the ball, aiming for the tip-in winner as the keeper was out of position, but the speed was too high and the deflection went just high over the crossbar.

William and Mary is back on the road next weekend, traveling to Ohio for a pair of matches in Oxford.  The Tribe will take on Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Sept. 16, before facing UC Davis in a neutral-site tilt on Saturday.  Both matches will begin at 3 p.m.
